Thanksgiving

Here is a brief report explaining Thanksgiving day

Each year on the Thursday 4th November, Americans celebrate this day. While today´s Thanksgiving celebrations would likely be unrecognizable compared to the original 1621 harvest meal, it continues to be a day for Americans to come together around the table. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared and autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. It wasn’t until 1863, during the Civil War, that the President at the moment, who was Abraham Lincoln, declared Thanksgiving Day a national day.

In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost all its original religious significance; instead, nowadays people concentrate on cooking and sharing a meal with family and friends. The Pilgrims' days of thanksgiving were always spent in church, singing psalms, listening to sermons and praying. Work and playful pastimes done nowadays were forbidden. When God provided good things, the Pilgrims were serious about gratitude.

Turkey is eaten nowadays in Thanksgiving, actually around 280 million turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving in the United States, moreover, nearly 90% of Americans eat this bird roasted, baked or deep fried on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering in ONG or any other kind of organization is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities and families often offer free food for the less fortunate. Nevertheless, it is believed that at that time, they ate deer ducks, geese, oysters, lobster, eel and fish. They probably also ate pumpkins but they also didn't eat mashed potatoes like people do today.
The football game edition in Thanksgiving Classic games started in 1920 and since then the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys have played games on Turkey Day. However, in 2006, a third dame wins added with different teams playing. Moreover, historians believe that no turkey was served or eaten at the first Thanksgiving.

Other countries that celebrate Thanksgiving are: Germany, they celebrate the Harvest Thanksgiving Festival in early October; Korea in late September; Japan they celebrate it on November 23rd ; Liberia on November among many others.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was baptized on the 26th April 1564 in Stratford. Known throughout the world, his works have been performed in countless countries and occasions. Shakespeare wrote plays that caught a complete variety of emotions and conflicts and perhaps that is why nowadays so many adaptations of his plays are being turned into films like for example the very well-known film Romeo and Juliet. Although William was the third child of John Shakespeare, a leather merchant and Mary Arden, a local landed heiress, some records say that William had a non-existent education, as there are no records of it anywhere. Being the son of a public official had free tuition, but as there is uncertainty about his education, the question of the authenticity of his work was raised. However, the great majority of Shakespearean researchers believe that William Shakespeare wrote all his own plays as the lack of evidence about his life didn’t mean his plays weren’t his.  William Shakespeare's early plays were written in a conventional style with elaborate metaphors and rhetorical phrases that sometimes didn’t relate well enough with the story's plot.

With the exception of the play “Romeo and Juliet”, William’s first plays were generally histories and comedies although he also wrote romance as the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Nevertheless, although William Shakespeare was a respected man of the dramatic arts who wrote his plays in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, his reputation as a play writer wasn't acknowledge until the 19th century.

It is said that William Shakespeare died on his birthday, April 23, 1616, however many intellectuals assure that this is a myth as church records show he was buried at Trinity Church on April 25, 1616.

Do you want to know a bit more about Halloween?

Halloween is a feast celebrated on the night of October 31st. It has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). This festival of Samhain was a celebration of the ending of the harvest season in Gaelic culture.

Samhain was a day used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and get ready for winter. They believed that on October 31st , the borderline between the world of the living and the world of the dead would somehow overlap and the dead would come back to life and cause chaos; making people sick or damaging their needed crops. Therefore, people would light bonfires and wear costumes to scare away roaming ghosts.

Over time, Halloween developed into a community-based event which is child-friendly. Activities such as trick-or-treating bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving jack-o-lanterns take place during that day. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to get guided into the winter season with gatherings, costumes, sweet treats and masks which were worn trying to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.

The name Halloween (originally spelled Hallowe'en) is a contraction of All Hallows Even, meaning the day before All Hallows Day (known nowadays as All Saints Day), a Catholic holiday commemorating Christian saints done since the early Middle Ages on November 1st.

A jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin, associated with the holiday of Halloween. In a jack-o'-lantern, the top is cut off to form a lid and the inside flesh is then taken out; a monstrous or comical face, is carved out of the pumpkin's rind to expose the hollow interior. Then a light source (such as a normal candle or an electric one) is placed in before the lid is put back; creating various colors and flickering effects. It is common to see jack-o'-lanterns on doorsteps and as decorations prior to and during Halloween.

Trick-or-treating means going from house to house searching candy and other goodies. It has been a popular Halloween tradition in the United States and other countries for more than a 100 years. Possible ancestors to the modern-day trick-or-treating have been identified in ancient Celtic festivals, early Roman Catholic holidays and even medieval practices.

There are many things in the media which represents Halloween and one of the is film Trick or treat an 1986 American horror film  done by De Laurentiis Entertainment Group. Another one could be the famous 1993 series named Addams family written by Paul Rudnick. They are a close-knit extended family with decidedly macabre interests and supernatural abilities. However, Halloween has not just gone into films, it has also arrived to many game applications like Hay Day or Clah of Clans where new updates are made every time the date gets near, they change the music and some of the images that appear. Moreover, when talking about television programs, when the 31st of October arrives, each channel makes a special Halloween TV programming; showing series and films such as The Blair Witch Project, Haunted Houses, Fear the Walking Dead or American Horror Story. On the other hand, on radio programs, songs such as Thriller (Michael Jackson) or, Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield) are heard in order to create a creepy atmosphere.

What should I visit?

Last summer, I went to Scotland on a family trip and I saw many beautiful cities, towns and landscapes, like for example Inverness, Fort William and Fort George among many others. However, there was one specific place which I personally fell in love with and that was Loch Ness. There is a very small town next to it called Fort Augustus which makes a living thanks to the tourists. There was one café in special that I liked, as it had benches which were just in front of Loch Ness, so you could sit there and watch the sun set with a perfect view. Loch Ness is an incredible place as it is full of open spaces which are perfect for going hiking and mountaineering. Everything is very green due to the fact that pretty much all the time it is raining. There are lots of very high trees and often you can see foxes, birds and all kinds of animals running around the edge of the lake.

There was a cruise ship which with a previous reservation took you from the port to the centre of Loch Ness which was amazing to see, as you could clearly see all parts of the lake and how deep and dark coloured the water is which for me was particularly striking. Then we hired a speedboat with a guide and we moved across Loch Ness. The guide explained that whenever scientists and people in general came to see if they found the monster, they were not able to see anything under water because the water had a brownish colour and also the lake was too deep in order to be able to see anything. He explained that actually it was so deep that you could fit three and a half times the population of the world and that the water was so cloudy that if you put your hand only a few centimetres from your face, you would not be able to see it at all.

We did not organize anything with a travel agent as I personally love organizing trips and I booked all the hotels, the flights and the places we wanted to be in, in advanced and by myself. This way whenever we felt like changing the route, we could do it without hesitation. Most of the time we stayed in Bed and Breakfast as we had heard that the owners were always really nice and I need to say that all the people we meet were very friendly most of the time. It was quite cold during our holidays there so we wore warm clothes all the time, so we had to take pretty large suitcases in order to be able to fit everything inside.

We travelled by public transport all the time, not just because it was cheaper, but because my parents did not want to drive as they are not used to driving on the left. Moreover, when you travel this way, you get to meet many interesting people. Actually I remember a woman I meet who said she had worked for the queen as a cook. At first I did not believe her, but then she took out of her bag a photo of all the service who worked in the palace and the queen by her side. She also showed me a paper in which she had signed the contract to work in the royal palace, and it even had the royal stamp on it. I will never know if that was a true story or not, but one thing I know for sure is that I will never forget her.

Statue of Liberty

Do you want to know more about the Statue of Liberty?

The story of the statue of Liberty and her island has changed over the past years. Lady Liberty´s significance has grown as an inspiration to immigrants who sailed passed on their way to the famous America in search of the American Dream. The Statue was placed upon a granite pedestal inside the star-shaped walls of Fort Wood. A Presidential Proclamation declared Fort Wood and therefore Statue of Liverty a National Monument on October 15, 1924.

The Statue of Liberty was a shared effort between France and the United States during the American Revolution, which intended to honour the friendship between the two nations. The French sculpture Frederic Auguste Bartholdi created the statue out of copper, although the inner part was done by Gustav Eiffel. The statue was then given to the United States and placed on a small island in New York. Today it remains a symbol of freedom, democracy and freedom, which is the American Dream.

The Statue of Liberty looks very small when viewed from Brooklyn Bridge; however, when you look at it closely, it is an impressive figure in the New York Harbour. From the pedestal to the tip the statue is 305 feet tall and there are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head. The Statue has a green colour due to the weather´s effect on cooper. I 1986, the cooper torch was replaced by a torch overlaid with 24 carat golf. The 25 windows in the crown represent gemstones or natural minerals of the Earth. Lady Liberty´s dress represents 4000 square yards of fabric, and her shoe size, according to measurements her shoe size is 879.

The Purpose of Education

Nowadays, there are many ways of educating as society has evolved in many different branches. Each and every single person on the planet has different ways of both teaching and learning. Actually, according to the researcher Chomsky, education has two major styles, “the traditional” and the “indoctrination” styles and he even believes that the internet is not that useful in order to have a good education.

On the one hand, traditional education helps to achieve the highest goals in life, that of independence,as it permits people to determine how they want to learn. It has a very constructive part, as people learn what they really like and what they are good at. However, on the other hand, the indoctrination philosophy, is a type of education which makes all students follow a strict framework. They only get trained for passing standard tests and therefore they get trapped into a pattern of conformity as they have no urge to find any challenge when it comes to their intellectual life. Actually it is believed that although passing exams can be of some use, as it helps compare the knowledge someone have acquired as standard testing does not let one’s mind be free, and without mental challenges, says Chomsky how would scientists find all those advances we desperately need?

Although there are many technological advances, nowadays they are not so dramatic when it comes to the reaction of society as we have become very used to them. Chomsky thinks that technology occupies a very neutral part in education as he believes that internet is only valuable when it comes to looking up something you already understand. As well, he is also aware that we should be very cautious when we have no idea about the issue. We have to know what information to believe
in and  which pieces we should discard, as we should never forget that anyone can write on the internet and that there is no way of knowing if the person who has written that is more or less qualified.

Furthermore, when we are asked if education is an investment, often we do not know what to say as it is a very problematic issue. Here Chomsky believes that as long as we educate  people in the traditional method the whole country will have economic benefits. However, Chomsky adds that if we use this traditional method we must also promote team work, and social needs not total independence or else, we will not have enough advances such as the cure of a disease. Therefore, if things such as curing some diseases are not found, they affect the population in two ways. The first one is that they will not have the very cure and secondly, they will not be able to sell it for profit in other countries which will make the country lose millions of euros.

Overall, although there are various ways of educating, the traditional way will helps  in the majority of cases , as it permits us to fully develop ourselves and it will also help the rest of the population in many ways in it will therefore be an investment for the country. Moreover, we should always be very careful with the internet when making any kind of project as after all anyone can write on it without any kind of control.

Is it more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics?

As far as I am concerned, studies are crucial today in order to be able to get a decent job. Since we were youths we have been told that if we ever want to get a job and have a reasonable pay check, we should work and study hard throughout our lives in order to succeed, but does it matter what we learn during our school years? Will it change our future?

Nowadays children in most schools around the world have all kind of subjects going from the humanities such as history and literature, to the scientific side; mathematics and the three sciences. In other schools, kids can study the subjects which will help them for their degree at the university. In my opinion, children at elementary primary school until 6th grade should study a bit of everything as that would enrich their cultural knowledge. Nevertheless, I also believe that high school students pre-college should focus and only study what they need for university as that is what they are going to require throughout their entire lives and they will know the basic things from school.

I believe that most people would agree with me when I say that some subjects are not more important than others. Most individuals think that it does not matter what you study as we need people for all kinds of jobs; from literature teachers to doctors and both careers are as important because without teachers there would not be any doctors and without doctors people would die from illnesses.

Therefore, in my opinion, children should know a bit of all and then study in more depth for their specific degrees as by doing so, it will make an enormous difference in their future lives and jobs.

I am a woman

Girls with such beautiful eyes,
should never be sad.
Girls like you should never be scared.
We are free.
We are strong.
We are needed in this world.
We should always be respected.
Therefore, never feel inferior.
Always remember that,
your every tear is worth more
than many diamonds.
So say no to violence.
Never forget that you deserve the best.
Never forget that you are a woman.

Space Debris

I.According to the newspaper The Times, space debris is known as the “collection of artificial and extinct objects” which orbit around the Earth such as rocket stages and old satellite fragments. These objects often crash on Earth provoking both different reaction in society and destruction. Some people believe that this is an issue which could be quite problematic as one way or another, it affects our planet directly, but is that completely true?

II.       Space

A. Unknown material
B. Organic and inorganic material (debris)

III.      Scientists research

A. Technological advances
B. Scientists believe

IV.   Impact on society

A. Citizen Reactions
B. Impact on the Earth itself

V. Overall, I believe that although nowadays space debris is an issue that affects our planet, as it is appearing in many parts of the Earth, in a way, we can all be a bit less concerned as thanks to all the technological advances, if scientists saw that any kind of space debris could affect us physically, we could somehow get rid of it before it got to the Earth. Therefore, if I met a worried person, I would tell him not to worry as we are in good hands.

Youths and social networks

As far as I am concerned, nowadays technological devices are present in our lives at all times no matter where we are. We live in a society which is completely addicted to all kind of electronic gadgets and although there are many advantages to all these useful advances, I believe that there are also many disadvantages.

On the one hand, there are many positive points as thanks to the internet and to all those technological devices, we have unlimited access to things such as any kind of information, e-mails and videos among many others. Actually, today you can even go shopping online without having to leave your own house which is something that saves you a lot of time as you are brought to your doorstep anything you have decided to buy. Moreover, if you are far away from home, you can speak to everyone you want via Skype, whatsapp or any other social network, no matter where you are, as you can always get online.

On the other hand, it is also true that it is difficult to put up with things that come from the internet such as spams, junk e-mails, and people hacking into other people´s laptops to get information. There are many dangerous things when it comes to social networks especially for children and teenagers as for example, giving too much personal information about themselves. There are many people who take advantage of these naïve kids by pretending to be their friends and then kidnapping them or finding out when there isn’t anyone at home in order to be able to rob the house.

Overall, I believe that although being a techno-lover has many advantages such as having information available everywhere, it also has various disadvantages with which we have to be very careful and make sure that everyone, especially youths, keep the dangers in mind.

Bored

Long boring hours
Which are often bitter and sour
Desperate to go home
Can´t because it´s not time to go
Been here since nine o´clock
and will leave in about five hours work
Although I cannot stand it anymore
I try to wait, but it´s too long
Repetition, repetition and more repetition
And actually, it´s hard to get recognition
When we don´t even have any innovation
I know it is hour education
but all this is just an aberration.

Log Off

Stop looking at that
Come and take part on family life
Because actually, we are your life
Please log off
Please come back to real life
Lay off from that virtual world.
I know it offers interesting stuff
But it´s not worth that much
We should not judge
Although you are growing a moustache
Time is running out
Tick-tack, you can hear it going down
Get the hell out of here
You are an incredible seer
You should not be disappearing.
Please log off
Before you die off

With this poem I have tried to recreate a conversation that most youths have had with their mother or father due to the excessive use of technological devices.

Are adverts affecting today´s society?

Nowadays no matter where we look, we see advertisings everywhere bombarding us with all kinds of information all the time. It is believed that they deeply affect today´s society and especially young people and children as they are the most vulnerable of all, but is this statement completely true or does it have advantages as well?

On the one hand, I believe that often, some commercials trick people by promoting something which is then completely different from what we were told it was. An example of this can be when we are informed that an object or a specific type of food is of very high quality using striking and powerful  images, slogans, spoken commentary and perhaps even a very unforgettable or impacting ending. When we see all of these, we directly buy it because we believe that it is the best option, and then we find out  that we have been fooled. These kind of adverts are done by experts on marketing agencies who work onIy advertising  and who know how to trick us without getting into trouble with the law. Actually most of these adverts cost a fortune as usually famous people are paid to appear in the advertisement and in order to make it more popular and therefore make sure they promote the product in the best way possible.

On the other hand, I also see eye to eye with the people who believe that thanks to adverts, citizens get to know are well informed about  everything that is out in the market, specially the important things like for example the new technological devices that help diabetic people with their glucose levels. As  social security does not give it to the patients, if it weren’t for the adverts all these people would not know of the existence of this device.

Therefore, if I were the government, I would undoubtedly make a law were all kind of advertisements and commercials could only say completely true things without any exception. Commercials are something that help both the company promote and the customer get to know the prize and the details of the product so, as long as they are done in a non-harming way, why should we not have adverts?

Ending

Jeremy, the cop, was not ready to lose another person to death. He had studied criminology and psychology and he knew that he was capable of convincing anyone to do what he wanted. Nevertheless he was aware that he had not been able to be successful with the last few people he had tried to convince not to commit suicide, and that was exactly why his coworkers did not take him seriously, but what could he do? It was clear that this man was not going to be easily convinced.

Jeremy went back to the window and put his head out in order to be able to see the man properly once again. The sun was shining and there were no clouds on the sky, you could even hear birds singing happily around them. For Jeremy, that would have been the perfect day to go for a walk with the family or practicing sports… He believed that all this was very ironic as nobody would imagine that during that beautiful day, someone would be trying to commit suicide.  The cop laid his eyes back to the unlucky man and that is when he realized that the man was directly staring at the crowd which was encouraging him to jump.

-What the hell is wrong with these people? The cop thought to himself. What kind of disgusting creature emboldens someone who is about to ruin his life?
Abruptly he saw a sudden move and afraid that he was about to jump, without losing any time he told the man:

-“Ok, let´s do something, you tell me why you are here and then you can do whatever you want. I won´t keep you off from your destiny. Now tell me”, he asked him anxiously.
-“I know what you are trying to do cop. You only want to safe your dam job, that is why you are trying to help me! You don’t really care about me so don’t dare getting near me or I will jump!” the suicide shouted angrily.

-“Actually you are right”, said Jeremy with an arrogant tone. “I don’t really care why you are here and hey, I don’t even care if you jump either, but you know what? Nobody cares about anyone else, nowadays, people just think of themselves, so accept it and stop losing my time”.

Jeremy was about to go back into the hotel room and abandon the man to his fate when he realized that he was trying to sit down. Jeremy went back to his original position and just when he looked at the suicide, the guy started to talk.

-“My name is Ray and I was about to marry the most beautiful woman in this city. She was intelligent, timid… she was hilarious!”

Suddenly, Ray started crying uncontrollably. It seemed as if he was about to have a heart attack and obviously Jeremy was scared that he was going to fall due to this reaction so he encourage him to try and continue speaking by touching the back of his shoulder.

-“My wife has abandoned me. I won´t be able to get her back. She was perfect… Now I won´t be able to have a family and I will have to live on my own for the rest of my life. Cop, I don’t think it is worth living without having her in my life. She is my angel!” Ray cried loudly.

Jeremy did not know what to say as he knew how the man felt. Actually he had lived a similar situation a few years earlier as his wife had left him too. Suddenly he felt he wasn’t strong enough to help the poor man. How am I going to aid this man, if I wasn’t able to fix my relationship either? He thought to himself.

He was about to leave again when a big bird appeared form nowhere and landed next to Ray. It was a very big bird, we could even say that it was approximately 1 meter long. This creature, was extremely colorful and although it was hard to believe, it had colors going from dull grays and browns to brilliant reds, yellows, greens, and blues. It had a straight and short, brown beak and a pair of enormous, black eyes which if you looked carefully, transmitted peace.

Jeremy was completely flabbergasted when he saw the beauty of the bird. He had never seen such animal in his whole life, which was incredible as he was an animal lover and he knew in great detail most of the animals in the whole world. He was so abstracted on what he had seen, that he did not realize that the bird had turned into an exquisite woman. She was very tall and slim and had dark, black, straight hair and the same enigmatic eyes the bird had had previously. Jeremy saw her look directly into Ray´s eyes and after what seemed hours, both the women and Ray turned into suddenly into birds as if they were cocoons tuning into butterflies. The rose to the sky at the same time and left the place flying and moving away; flapping their wings towards the hazy horizon.

Do you have to drink and smoke in order to have a good time with friends?

Unfortunately, nowadays youths do not know how to have a good time with friends without smoking or drinking. They believe that by drinking alcohol and smoking, they will turn out to be more popular and that they will have many friends, but is that completely true? Do you turn out to be fashionable by doing it?

I see eye to eye with people who believe that children and specially youths are very strongly influenced by society. Everywhere we look, not just in bars or restaurants but on social networks as well, we see people smoking and drinking and, as we tend to associate that with being able to have fun, we unconsciously copy it as often, we believe that society will accept us if we carry out those actions.  Moreover, as teenagers basically depend on technological devices and therefore on social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, they are bombarded constantly with this social pressure.

On the other hand, it is also true that there are also many other children who do not like following society and deny smoking or drinking alcohol. These teenagers like playing outdoors, practising sports and meeting with other youths to perhaps play board games. Unluckily, many of these kids suffer bullying and they often try to keep their dislike towards these kind of actions as a secret. This is perfectly hideous as it should never happen to anyone just because they do not like the same things as the rest of the children. Therefore, if I were the government, I would undoubtedly make laws which would strictly prevent bullying, as it is something disgraceful.

Overall, I believe that although many youths try to avoid it, most of them do not know how to how to share happiness with their friends if it is not drinking or smoking. Therefore, if I were a person who had great impact on society, I would certainly make something to change this behaviour, as what is better than having a healthy time with your friends?

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is commonly referred as one of the most problematic issues in the world as it is strictly linked to global warming. Not just because of global warming, but due to some human acts like for example deforestation, it is causing some ecosystem to disappear among many other horrible issues. This causes the extinction of many animas which often are very important as they serve for feeding other creatures or even plants. It is undoubtedly known that biodiversity has provided us with many benefits. Some of them come in the form of goods that can be of great value and cost because they provide something that can be taken and sold. These goods include everything from domesticated agricultural crops that provision the basis of the food for the whole world, to medicines that protect and cure us, the make-up and the clothes we usually wear. Therefore it is clearly seen that the cost associated with the deterioration or vanishing of various ecosystems will be very high although not many people are aware of it yet.

One of my class mates, has given me various very useful solutions and one of them is that we should control the human presence in a specific set of places, in order to prevent the destruction of valuable ecosystems for some animal species. I completely see eye to eye with my class mate, moreover, I believe that the governments in every single country should create a law which made sure that people could not damage important ecosystems or any other necessary thing. Nevertheless, I am aware that this idea is quite difficult to carry it out, but what can we lose by trying?
